Mike Maignan’s five-word reaction to his costly Champions League howler did not impress Milan fans, especially with a massive salary increase on the horizon.
The goalkeeper horribly fumbled an Igor Paixao shot to let it squirm in at the near bottom corner just three minutes into their 1-0 defeat away to Feyenoord last night.
It left them with a mountain to climb in the second leg of the Champions League play-off, which will be at San Siro on Tuesday evening.
Maignan reflected on the situation with an Instagram Story that showed him smiling in the warm-up, with the caption: “Bad day at the office…”
It did not entirely impress the Rossoneri supporters, who had expected some sort of apology and admission of culpability, certainly not with a smiling photograph.
Maignan has recently become the regular captain of the squad, after the departure of Davide Calabria and previous coach Paulo Fonseca rotating the armband.
Above all, the goalkeeper is in negotiations for a massive new contract that would see him earn €5m per season until June 2029.
It is not the first time he has been guilty of a howler this season, also making costly errors against Como, Cagliari and Juventus in Serie A.
