The move that brought Luka Doncic away from the Dallas Mavericks, converting him into a new superstar for the Los Angeles Lakers, came out of nowhere and shocked the whole NBA landscape.
Even the former owner of the Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban didn’t know about it, as he revealed once again when interviewed by YMH Studios.
“I was in Florida, eleven at night. I got a text, and it was from our general manager and I thought he was asking me what I thought, and I realized very quickly he was telling me what happened. i told him I didn’t agree with it, but it wasn’t my decision to make,” he recalled.
“I love Luka, we weren’t best buddies but I’d text him all the time, and I’d give him all these motivational quotes, and books to read. We had a good relationship, I got along well with his dad,” he also said.
Mark Cuban commented that he was “just as dumbfounded as everybody else,” revealing also why he doesn’t have to deal anymore with the basketball operations department of the team, of which he sold the majority shares to Patrick Dumont back in December 2023.
“The majority owner Patrick Dumont decided that he was comfortable with the GM Nico Harrison, and the team he has put together. You can’t totally argue with him, because we went to the Finals. It was his choice, I’m just a fan now. Over time it was “In Nico we trust,” and here we are,” he said.
“You don’t have to convince me, I don’t get it either. In 2004 I let Steve Nash walk, and he won two MVPs the next two years, but the good news was he beat us in the Playoffs the first year after he left, then we made it to the Finals and won the championship. It kind of covered all that,” he recalled.
Luka Doncic spent time with the Dallas Mavericks from his rookie season in the NBA back in 2018 to 2024, when the team came back to the NBA Finals and lost to the Boston Celtics. Since his move to the Lakers, he has been averaging 26.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game.
