Sport news: Loftus-Cheek season might be over as Milan confirm emergency surgery

It is possible the season is already over for Ruben Loftus-Cheek after Milan confirmed emergency surgery performed to remove his appendix, as questions are raised about his treatment.

The midfielder had been expected to start in this evening’s Serie A match against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

However, he was suffering from abdominal pain while at the team hotel in Naples overnight and was taken to hospital for further tests, which showed acute appendicitis.

“AC Milan can confirm that Ruben Loftus-Cheek underwent laparoscopic appendectomy surgery today due to acute abscessed appendicitis,” read a statement from the club.

“The operation, which was performed by Professor Francesco Corcione and his team, went perfectly to plan.

According to MilanNews.it, this type of operation will require circa a month to recover from, after which it could take two months for Loftus-Cheek to regain full fitness enough to play.

It suggests his season could already be over, a campaign that was damaged by a series of injury setbacks, which saw him make only 21 competitive appearances.

There are also questions to be answered over how long it took Milan medical staff to realise Loftus-Cheek had a badly inflamed appendix, because quick treatment is essential in these cases.

The wording of the statement could imply that the appendix had already burst, which can be fatal if not treated quickly.

The player spent the night at the team hotel in Naples, so in theory should’ve been in the perfect situation to see the doctors straight away.
