The Boston Red Sox appear to have a much stronger roster in 2025 than they have in recent years. In the offseason, they added Alex Bregman, Aroldis Chapman, Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet.
They are off to a bit of a slow start this year, but could certainly be a force in the American League if all goes according to plan.
While it may be early to speculate on what their roster could look like in the future, there are few players that could be playing their final seasons in Boston.
Zach Pressnell of FanSided believes right-hander Lucas Giolito is one of them.
“When looking at the Red Sox roster and who they could cut ties with at the end of the 2025 season, there are a few names who jump off the stage. One of those names is starting pitcher Lucas Giolito,” Pressnell predicted.
“With the righty hitting free agency at the end of the year, the Red Sox will likely let him walk away in free agency rather than attempt to re-sign him. A player like Giolito will likely land a nice sized contract from a smaller market team who’s willing to overspend to add a pitcher.”
Giolito had a brace procedure in his right elbow in the spring of 2024. That kept him out for the whole season. He is still recovering from that injury and is on the injured list to start 2025.
He struggled in 2023 with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians, posting a 4.88 ERA in 33 starts. He hasn’t quite been himself since 2021.
But if he can get healthy, he could be a solid piece for the Red Sox rotation in 2025. Because he missed 2024 however and has struggled to stay healthy, this could very well be his final year in Boston.
We’ll see what the former All-Star can do once he gets healthy.
