Anthony Edwards has always had trouble with the referees because he is vocal. The Minnesota Timberwolves superstar often gets in trouble, as he has a huge tally of technical fouls throughout his career.
In the 2024-25 season, Ant was called a league-leading 17 technical fouls. His accumulation of too many techs forced him to serve a one-game suspension
Edwards has become extra careful with his reactions to referee calls after getting the suspension. He wants to be there for his team, so he is acting calmer despite some absurd calls occasionally.
This has helped the Timberwolves because they want Ant to be there as much as possible. Playing with a technical foul could lead to consequences, as Minnesota does not want to have their superstar ejected or suspended.
In Game 2 of the series against the Los Angeles Lakers, Edwards had a prominent moment when he called out the referees. He heard and saw LeBron James visibly complaining to the referee, which often leads to a technical foul for Ant.
That is a double standard in Edwards’ eyes because he has been called for plenty of similar moments. He wants the referees to know that because it is unfair to him if he has a bad reputation among referees when other players do the same thing.
LeBron has earned his reputation as a respected superstar, but that should not mean he is different from Ant, who would get called for doing the same thing.
Edwards is doing the right thing by calling out the referees. They are doing their best to keep the game under control. However, they are influencing the games too much, especially with some errant technical foul calls
If Ant gets his message across, it would be good for the NBA because every player is being treated fairly without any issues.
