Since the move took place, Harrison and the Mavericks’ ownership has only made things worse, at least that’s what the Dallas fanbase believes.
After making the supposed trade to enter win-now mode, the Mavs failed to advance to the 2025 NBA playoffs. Despite that, one NBA legend believes GM Harrison did the right thing by trading Doncic.
One major criticism that Harrison faced for his decision to trade Doncic was getting an older, injury-prone player in Anthony Davis.
However, Orlando Magic legend Penny Hardaway actually supports Harrison’s decision.
“Nico was my guy, but you talk about big balls, Nico stood in what he believed in, that takes a lot. Obviously we not on the inside but that takes a lot to trade Luka man, we know AD is as talented as anyone bro,” Hardaway said.
“Luka is younger, could be the face of the league, that’s a tough trade. I do say if that group is healthy with Kyrie and everyone healthy, they could be in the Western Conference Finals. That’s why I feel bad for Nico.
“I believe in Nico now, he made power moves, he’s going to be OK I promise you,” he added.
Hardaway made this huge claim during a recent appearance on the OGs podcast. It’s certainly a controversial statement and could lead to the Mavs fanbase resenting the former NBA star.
After going through a dramatic mid-season trade, Doncic is reportedly now focused on building his legacy as a member of the LA Lakers.
Evidently, many view Doncic as the next face of the NBA, especially considering he is now playing for a glamourous franchise like the Lakers. Hardaway and Udonis Haslem dropped their final verdict on what’s next for Doncic.
Hardaway on how Luka Doncic is respected in the NBA as a European star: “They respect Luka because he can put the ball in the basket. Luka got swag bro, and the Lakers jersey.”
While Haslem added: “I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but what I will say is I need my best player to also be my leader. That’s all I’m saying.”
