Even at 40, LeBron James continues to shatter expectations. As the 2024-25 NBA season unfolded, the Los Angeles Lakers’ veteran star reminded the league why he remains one of basketball’s most enduring icons. Turning 40 in December 2024 didn’t slow him down-in fact, his production on the court rivaled that of stars a decade younger

James finished the regular season averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds over 70 games. His leadership and consistency helped propel the Lakers into the playoffs, supported by newly acquired superstar Luka Doni. The dynamic duo revitalized the team’s postseason hopes, but their journey ended prematurely with a tough first-round exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite the early playoff disappointment, LeBron’s performance drew praise from fans and analysts alike. He defied the aging curve, securing sixth place in the league’s MVP voting with 16 total points. Outpacing younger stars such as Anthony Edwards, Stephen Curry, Jalen Brunson, and James Harden, LeBron’s MVP consideration sparked widespread admiration across social media. Some fans celebrated his top-six finish at 40, while others lightheartedly joked about his “familiar” position at No. 6-matching his jersey number.

While LeBron’s sustained excellence captured headlines, the spotlight ultimately belonged to Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The 25-year-old was officially named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024-25 season, capping off a remarkable year in which he led OKC to a league-best 68-14 record.

Averaging 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and 5 rebounds per game, Gilgeous-Alexander’s all-around dominance helped position the Thunder as serious title contenders. His MVP award made history, as he became only the second Canadian player ever to earn the honor, joining two-time winner Steve Nash.

Shai’s humble yet powerful MVP acceptance speech resonated with fans. He credited his teammates-who each received a Rolex watch as a thank-you gift-and his wife, Hailey Summers, for their unwavering support throughout his journey. The Thunder star’s rise has been steady, and this MVP season cemented his place among the league’s elite.

As for the MVP race, while Shai led convincingly, the final voting results highlighted LeBron’s continued relevance. Finishing sixth in voting at his age is not only rare-it’s unprecedented. It’s a testament to his skill, conditioning, and basketball IQ that he remains a top-tier contributor in his third decade in the league.

The 2024-25 NBA season offered a captivating narrative: a generational passing of the torch. LeBron James, still dominant at 40, showcased what longevity and excellence can achieve. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP win ushered in the next era of greatness. Both stars, in different phases of their careers, left indelible marks on a season defined by resilience, reinvention, and rising talent.
