Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has an important decision to make regarding his future. The 40-year-old will be running out of his regular contract with the Lakers in the summer. Although, he does have a player option to continue playing for the 17 time NBA Champions.
According to ESPN Journalist Shams Charania, LeBron James has made his mind on his contract situation. James is likely to opt into his $52.6 million player option, extending his California chapter. James, who joined the Lakers in 2017, has made a legacy of himself with the franchise.
However, the current season was no different from a mountainous challenge. LeBron James struggled with injuries on one hand and on the other, he received little support on the court. Even in the first half of the season, the Lakers had a poor record and struggled to make a mark.
The Luka Doncic trade gave LeBron brief relief, but it didn’t shift the season’s narrative. The Lakers’ first-round loss to the Timberwolves was further proof of the team’s ongoing struggles. Anthony Edwards side out matched King James.
LeBron James individually had a good season, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists with 51.3 FG percent. He will try to run back his performances once again in the next year. The Lakers are also looking at improving the side and adding more firepower.
Shams Charania also reported that James plans to meet with Lakers management to discuss the roster’s future and necessary upgrades. The Lakers, who finished as the West’s third seed, require significant upgrades to contend for another title run, and King James wants to make it clear to the front office as well.
The side is reportedly on the lookout for a big center, as their defense has struggled without Anthony Davis. Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves shredded the Lakers’ defense, while LA’s offense couldn’t keep pace under pressure. With LeBron nearing retirement, the Lakers’ championship window is closing fast and a rebuild led by Doncic may be inevitable.
