Amid Viktor Gyokeres’ arrival at Arsenal, Martin Zubimendi’s own move from Real Sociedad has almost been overshadowed.
Martin Zubimendi was Arsenal’s first big signing of the summer, a transfer pursuit that even pre-dates Andrea Berta’s arrival in north London.
Edu Gaspar did a lot of the hard work behind Zubimendi’s move to the Emirates Stadium, and the now Nottingham Forest decision-maker does deserve credit.
Of course, Mikel Arteta also played a vital role himself.
Arteta spoke about a move to Arsenal with Zubimendi several times according to reports, and that’s perhaps why the Gunners were able to convince the midfielder to leave Spain.
Liverpool tried to sign Zubimendi themselves 12 months prior, only to be left frustrated.
That being said, when Liverpool were in pole position to sign Zubimendi, Ian Wright made a rather audacious claim about the difference the midfielder could make at Anfield.
Talking alongside Owen Hargreaves on ‘The Kelly and Wrighty Show’ in September 2024, the duo were discussing if Liverpool needed a number six.
And when speaking about the Reds’ chance of winning the Champions League, Wright suggested that Zubimendi could be the difference.
Speaking first, Hargreaves said: “To win the Champions League, they need a Rodri, well not a Rodri because he will probably win the Ballon d’Or.
“But they need somebody top level, and if they get that I think they could win everything.”
Wright then replied: “If they could get Zubimendi, he’s the one you think could be that guy, I think he could be that guy.”
Whilst Wright wasn’t speaking about Arsenal, his words do already look somewhat applicable to Zubimendi’s start to life in north London.
Arsenal will be hoping to go one better in the Champions League this season.
And whilst no one is claiming that Zubimendi will suddenly lead Arsenal to domestic and European glory, he can certainly make a huge difference.
Zubimendi has been phenomenal in pre-season for Arsenal, and he showcased all of his ability in the Gunners’ 3-0 win over Athletic Club.
And whilst Arsenal fans get excited about Gyokeres, perhaps Zubimendi is actually the catalyst signing who can help Arteta bring major honours back to N5.
Wright previously thought Zubimendi could be the clutch addition for Liverpool, but he’s now got the pleasure of watching the number six for his own club.
