Set to stay: Arsenal attacker agrees signicant pay rise…see more

Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard has reportedly reached an agreement with the club over a new contract.

Trossard has been linked with a move away during the summer transfer window, having seemingly fallen down the pecking order in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Following the signing of Noni Madueke, Trossard is now having to compete with the former Chelsea man and Gabriel Martinelli for a spot on the left flank.

Madueke and Martinelli both enjoyed minutes in Arsenal’s opening day win over Manchester United, but Trossard was left on the bench as an unused substitute.

There has also been a suggestion that Arsenal could look to sign another winger, which would only have an adverse effect on Trossard’s squad status.

However, according to The Athletic, Trossard has agreed a new contract with Arsenal despite his potential concerns over his playing time.

The deal will see the Belgian enjoy a ‘significant pay rise’ on his current terms, but he will not actually extend his contract beyond its current expiration date.

As a result, Trossard will still be in the final two years of his Arsenal contract when his new deal is announced.

The report also claims that there are ‘no significant developments’ regarding a possible move away before the transfer deadline.

While Trossard may not have extended his deal, his new pay rise suggests that he will stay at the club for at least one more season.

As a result, it is difficult to see why Arsenal would sign another left winger, unless they are willing to risk upsetting their current options, who would see their playing time decrease with a new arrival.

With that in mind, the Gunners may focus on other areas of Mikel Arteta’s squad if they decide to delve into the transfer market in the next two weeks.

They may be tempted to pursue an attacking midfielder who can add a little more creativity in the final third.
