Viktor Gyokeres has claimed an award for his searing form for Sporting CP over the 2024/25 season.
It doesn’t take a lot to consider why Arsenal decided to sign Gyokeres from Sporting this summer.
The Swede found the net 97 times over his two-season stay in Lisbon, where he guided Sporting to back-to-back Liga Portugal titles.
On the subject of back-to-back, Gyokeres has been crowned the winner of an award, a crown that showcases his reliability in the number nine role, which is just what Arsenal need.
The 27-year-old will have to break the Premier League scoring record if he is to replicate his form in Liga Portugal last season, with his individual quality winning him the award.
For the second year running, Gyokeres was crowned as Sofascore’s highest-rated player in Liga Portugal.
Maintaining an average match rating of 8.00 over 33 appearances, Arsenal’s summer signing ran away with the award, just as he did the year prior.
The award comes as no surprise, as Gyokeres netted 39 league goals for Sporting last term, scoring 29 the year before, where his average match rating was 7.92.
Mikel Arteta will certainly hope his new striker brings the same shooting boots with him to the Emirates, which he’s already shown he has.
Gyokeres scored on his Emirates debut, netting a header against Athletic Bilbao in the Emirates Cup to get off the mark in red and white.
While Arsenal were struggling without a striker, Gyokeres was running riot in Lisbon.
Now, the club and player will combine for, hopefully, a similar level of success as the forward experienced in Portugal.
After learning Gyokeres’ average match rating in the Liga Portugal last term, it’s interesting to see who Arsenal’s top performers were.
As seen above, Sofascore listed Arsenal’s top-performing players in the 2024/25 Premier League, with Bukayo Saka coming out on top.
The top three consisted of Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, with the trio playing their part for the Gunners last term.
With Gyokeres now on board, Arteta will be eager to see his new striker collect a third consecutive Sofascore award, this time, in the Premier League.
