Next summer, Luka Modric could have his stay at AC Milan extended, thanks to a pre-agreed clause in his contract. A masterstroke, it seems.
The impact that Modric has had on Milan has been unexpected. Most thought he would be good; some may have doubted him. However, at 40 years old, he has been a revolution for Milan, and now the business in the mercato could forever change.
Luck of 40
Age is just a number, and in fact, he looks much younger than what is shown on his birth certificate. In Serie A, he is making those much younger look much older, whilst he enjoys a second youth in the colours which were so inspiring to him as a youth.
As things stand, it is unlikely that the option to extend the Croatian’s stay will not be activated. After all, he has given no reason for it not to be. Today, Alfredo Pedulla looked at the situation for Football Italia.
“Luka Modric is continuing to show that age is just a number after a series of inspiring performances for Milan, including in Sunday night’s 2-1 victory over Fiorentina, and now, it looks like the option to extend the Croatian’s one-year contract is nothing but good news for the Rossoneri.
“Modric, who turned 40 in September, was a key player in Milan’s 2-1 win over Fiorentina, leading the midfield, showing great vision and a spirit of sacrifice. The Rossoneri veteran won the ball back, controlled the space, and inspired his younger teammates, as he has done all season.
“The Italian press had nothing but positive things to say about the former Ballon d’Or winner after the Fiorentina victory, describing him as an ‘ageless champion’.
“Modric is showing that he is increasingly important within the Milan squad as well: Last night, he praised the returning Rafael Leao for his performance, showing that he is a leader both on and off the pitch.
“Now, the option to extend Modric’s contract for a further 12 months is nothing but good news for Milan, and might, in fact, be a stroke of luck.”
