The Reds may need to be on the lookout for a new forward soon, as the Mohamed Salah exit rumours continue to swirl.
And according to journalist Neil Jones for Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, they have previously scouted a number of players in Salah’s position, including Chiesa.
“If I look at players Liverpool have liked previously, none jump out now as obvious signings [to replace Salah],” he explained. “Bukayo Saka would be virtually impossible to get out of Arsenal, while Son Heung-min’s age makes him a no-go.
“Jarrod Bowen probably isn’t at the level required, whereas the likes of Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman and Federico Chiesa have all had their ups and downs. Chiesa was definitely someone Liverpool looked at previously.”
Liverpool looked at Chiesa
There was a time where it looked likely that Liverpool would pursue Chiesa with some vigour.
Prior to his permanent move to Juventus, the Reds were seemingly well in the chase to sign the Italian from Fiorentina.
At that time, two or three years ago, Chiesa looked like a sure thing. Strong on either foot, quick, direct, tenacious. Everything Jurgen Klopp values in an attacker.
But since then. the forward has been desperately unlucky with injury. After suffering an ACL problem in early 2022, the 25-year-old has never quite hit his level since.
That seemingly resulted in Chiesa being told he could leave Juventus this summer. Liverpool were inevitably linked, repeatedly, with a £34m move, but it never transpired.
Nevertheless, could the Euro 2020 winner really be back on the radar if Salah goes? If he can get back to something like the Chiesa we saw a couple of years ago, then we don’t see why not. He’s started the season well, with two goals in the opening three Serie A games.
Although he’s still at Juventus – and doing well – the winger no longer looks like a natural fit there. If they like what they see this campaign then perhaps the Reds will decide to renew their interest.
