Eden Hazard might complete a surprise signing for Liverpool’s Europa League rivals.

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are part of Liverpool's Europa League group and are claimed to be targeting a marquee move for a free agent

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are reportedly looking to land a major marquee signing ahead of their clash with Liverpool.

The Belgian side are part of the Reds’ Europa League group, with Jurgen Klopp’s side getting underway against LASK on Thursday night. Union SG are a team with a growing reputation, having reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season and finished second in the league.

Their success in recent years is connected to investment from Brighton owner Tony Bloom. Union SG’s rise will be familiar to one player in the Liverpool squad, Alexis Mac Allister, whose brother Kevin joined the club this summer. Their squad also includes a trio of Englishmen, who have played for Swansea City, Portsmouth and Accrington Stanley, respectively.

However, Union SG are reportedly targeting a much more ambitious move. Belgian star Eden Hazard remains a free agent after leaving Real Madrid in June and the Brussels-based club want to bring the 32-year-old back to his homeland.

That’s according to Spanish outlet AS, who claim that the club are ‘interested’ in signing the former Chelsea talisman and reviving his career. Since completing his £89m move to Real Madrid in 2019, Hazard has struggled for fitness and made just 10 appearances overall in his final season at the Bernabeu.

The report states that Hazard’s response to Union SG has been ‘lukewarm’, so far, while other offers have also not been overly convincing. However, Union SG hope that the prospect of joining his two brothers in the Belgian capital will be too tempting to turn down. Thorgan Hazard recently signed for Anderlecht, while the younger Kylian plays for RWD Molenbeek.

Union SG take on Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday, October 5. But their Europa League squad has already been submitted for the group stage, with rules suggesting Hazard would be unable to feature even if he signed.

The forward has already scored in the Europa League against the Reds for Lille, back in the 2009/10 season, and has a total of nine goal involvements in his previous 18 games against the club.
