What Scott McTominay did before Manchester United’s game against Brentford, which led to a late comeback

Scott McTominay has dedicated his crucial goals against Brentford to Manchester United fans and those who work at the club after being inspired by David Beckham’s newly-released documentary.

The midfielder came on in the 87th minute to net two stoppage-time goals and help United earn a much-needed 2-1 win over the Bees, following consecutive defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray.

Beckham’s new film documentary, ‘BECKHAM’, was released on Netflix this week, detailing the career of the global football icon. McTominay said he had watched it the night prior to his double against Brentford and detailed how it inspired him on Saturday.

Speaking to MUTV, he said: “I can’t put into words what it was like for that second one. It was an out-of-body experience, really. I was watching David Beckham’s documentary last night and you see the history and the people behind the club.

“That’s what the lads do it for, Kath on reception, the kitmen, everyone, it’s so important we all come together and that’s what it means at this football club, we do it for the people. The people have been coming to this football club for many, many years. Same as me – I’m a fan so I want us to do well.”

McTominay has had to bide his time for minutes this season with two new midfielders arriving at the club this summer and Kobbie Mainoo – who suffered a pre-season injury – also rising through the ranks.

His appearance against Brentford was his third in the Premier League as a substitute this term, having only started two others. The Scot – who has been in fine scoring form for his country in 2023 – has been trying to show he is deserving of more game time on the training pitch.

Asked about what the message was before he came on against Brentford, McTominay said: “I was speaking to Darren Fletcher and the other coaches and that’s what they said, whenever you get the opportunity, go on and show yourself.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to do in training as well and show I’m capable of moments like that and long may it continue in the future if we can come together as a team and start playing how we know we can.”
