Liverpool face a tough trip away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday as the Reds look to get back to winning the ways in the Premier League.
Goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota handed Liverpool a 2-0 win over Union St. Gilliose in the Europa League on Thursday, leaving the Reds top of Group D with two wins from two. After the controversial defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League last Sunday, it was important for Jurgen Klopp’s side to pick up three points on Thursday and rediscover the winning form they’ve shown so far this season.
The last meeting between the two in the Premier League ended in a 3-0 win for the Seagulls, with the Reds also falling to a 2-1 defeat against Brighton in the FA Cup last season. Brighton will be looking to bounce back from their 6-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 24 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.
We predict that Brighton could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Verbruggen; Veltman, Webster, Dunk, Lamptey; Gross, Gilmour; March, Welbeck, Mitoma; Ferguson.
We predict that Liverpool could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Endo, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister; Salah, Nunez, Diaz.
It was an extremely open first half on the south coast, with both sides finding themselves in dangerous positions but unable to find a breakthrough. Brighton started the second half the brightest side, and they were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute.
A driven cross into the Liverpool box saw Joel Matip challenge Danny Welbeck for the ball, but the Brighton man got there ahead of the defender, with Matip tripping the leg of the Englishman. Kauro Mitoma stepped up to take, and he fired down the middle to put his side ahead.
The Reds responded fantastically to going behind, and substitute Harvey Elliott almost levelled the score when he slid in at the back post only to turn Mohamed Salah’s cross onto the post. The pressure continued, and a deserved equaliser arrived 14 minutes from the final whistle.
Andy Robertson won back possession before finding Elliott in the middle and continuing his run forward. Elliott spotted the run of the defender and picked him out with a well-timed through ball, and Robertson took the ball in his stride before rifling his effort into the top corner to make it 1-1.
Neither side were able to find another goal in the closing stages though, and the game finished all square.
