Liverpool are currently in the middle of a huge transition under Jurgen Klopp as the club adapts to the losses of big name midfielders such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Those outgoings have been replaced by the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Waturo Endo. This transition has shown signs of promise in the opening weeks of the season and Liverpool recorded victories in five of their opening six matches. But one issue has become apparent and that is the lack of a defensive midfielder and the absence of Fabinho appeared more apparent…
One of the brightest spots in an often difficult 2022-23 campaign for Liverpool was the emergence of young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, the Serbian-Spanish 18-year-old who arrived at Liverpool from Celta Vigo in summer 2020. Liverpool fans weren’t the only ones taking note, though. At least according to Spanish football specialists Fichajes, who claim Sevilla is keeping close tabs on the youngster and could be set to make a move for him next summer. There’s a few head-scratchers in their claim, though. Like that his contract expires in the summer of 2023—which, yes, you haven’t come unstuck in time and is now…
Liverpool have a ‘strong’ interest in Real Betis wonderkid Assane Diao, according to one report. The 18-year-old winger has been one of the breakout stars in La Liga so far this season. Born in Senegal but representing Spain at Under-19 level, Diao has scored three times in his last four outings, including a late winner in Betis’ Europa League win over Sparta Prague earlier this month. Having only turned 18 in September, Diao is also the youngest player to score in each of his first two La Liga starts in the 21st century, according to Opta. Spanish rumours site Fichajes now claim…
Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha ahead of the January transfer window as his future still remains in doubt. The 28-year-old has shone during his time at Craven Cottage, and it’s not been at all surprising to see big clubs trying to sign him, such as Bayern Munich. According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool still also have an interest in Palhinha as they remain keen on strengthening their midfield, despite already making a flurry of new signings in that position during the summer. Five key first-team players all left the club, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho moving to Saudi…
A relatively unknown player made his debut in the Premier League earlier this month, and just six days later, he was presented with his own segment on Match of the Day. The flagship British show is dedicated to showing highlights of all of the weekend’s matches, with a Goal of the Month section included every four weeks. Murillo did not score a goal for Nottingham Forest, but that is exactly why he was awarded ‘Nearly Goal of the Month’ by the panel, which consisted of Mark Chapman, Alan Shearer and ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy. The Brazilian defender almost scored a…
Liverpool’s summer transfer business is coming back under the microscope for more or less the first time since the window closed. The immediate impact made by the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister had silenced any criticism, but a run of two games without a win has shifted focus back onto the deals that were not done. Whether or not that’s fair is another question, with Liverpool’s sole defeat coming courtesy of a calamitous VAR error. But the draw with Brighton, which saw Mac Allister struggle in the deepest midfield role upon the return to his old club, has led many to…
Referees chief Howard Webb has indicated that the PGMOL will push for a change to the laws of the game, allowing serious mistakes to be rectified even when play has been restarted. Webb is the chief refereeing officer of the body which represents match officials, and spoke at length on TNT Sports’ Match Officials: Mic’d Up programme on Tuesday evening, about the catastrophic error made at Spurs 10 days ago. Webb conceded it was “human error (caused by) loss of concentration”, which led to Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool being incorrectly disallowed, after a howler from the VAR Darren England,…
Another Premier League weekend, another decision that has gone against us. I actually thought Anthony Taylor did OK on Sunday in our match with Brighton, but the game ended with yet more questions hanging over the officials. The first talking point was the Virgil van Dijk handball appeal, but that’s not a penalty. It’s impossible. The ball has bounced off his leg onto his hand, so there is not even an argument there. Then we come to the circumstances around Liverpool’s penalty and the fact Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross was not carded for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. This incident…
PGMOL chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has broken his silence on the VAR mishap that occurred between Liverpool and Tottenham, revealing that action has already been taken to avoid further errors of the sort. Reds star Luis Diaz saw a goal wrongly ruled out last month against Spurs for offside, despite replays showing that the winger had been played on by defender Cristian Romero. Diaz’s goal would have given Liverpool a shock 1-0 lead against Tottenham, having been reduced to ten men just moments earlier, but ultimately did not have an impact on the final score. Jurgen Klopp’s side went on to lose…
Liverpool winger Luis Díaz has broken his silence on the controversial disallowed goal he scored against Tottenham Hotspur. In an interview, Díaz discussed the decision and expressed his thoughts on the incident. The disallowed goal occurred during a match where Liverpool was already down to 10 men. Díaz’s goal was ruled out following a quick video assistant referee (VAR) check by Darren England. Interestingly, the customary offside line graphic was not shown on TV during the check. It later emerged that England mistakenly believed the on-field decision had been to award the goal, leading to confusion among the officials. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL)…
