Liverpool topped the Premier League fair play table five times under Jurgen Klopp but now already have four red cards this season, more than they amassed in the previous four years! It has been quite the explosive start to the season for the Reds, who have been involved in a number of high-profile incidents. Jurgen Klopp‘s team have never been nasty and vindictive in their approach to the game, far from it, and it is why, prior to this season, red cards have proven extremely rare. But in the last eight games, Liverpool have had four red cards directed their way. First, with Alexis Mac…
Curtis Jones will serve his three-match ban for the red card he received during the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham following an unsuccessful appeal from Liverpool. Jones was shown a yellow card for his tackle on Yves Bissouma during the first half of Saturday’s clash, only for referee Simon Hooper to change his punishment to a red card after being advised by the VAR to check the pitchside monitor. The Reds appealed the decision on Monday in a bid to see the midfielder’s three-game suspension removed, but the club have since confirmed that those attempts have failed. It was a contentious decision from Hooper, with Jones unfortunate to…
Liverpool have reacquired their historic training ground at Melwood, with new faces walking its halls and calling the West Derby site home. If there was a common theme to the celebratory speeches that marked the official opening of the AXA Melwood Training Centre, it was that an incredible amount of work had gone into getting the facility back up to scratch. But for anyone who hadn’t visited the iconic training ground in the three years since the men’s first team departed, it didn’t look like much had changed at all. And that is great news for its new residents, the…
Liverpool are to appeal against the red card shown to Curtis Jones in Saturday’s controversy-filled defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds lost the match 2-1, with Spurs benefitting from a Joel Matip own goal deep into stoppage time. Jurgen Klopp’s side played much of the second half with just nine men, as Diogo Jota’s two yellows in quick succession followed Jones’ first-half dismissal. Jones was initially only booked by referee Simon Hooper for his challenge on Yves Bissouma in the 26th minute. The 22-year-old Liverpool midfielder appeared to win the 50/50 challenge, but then slipped with his momentum taking his foot over the…
Mikel Arteta has sent his sympathy to Liverpool after they were embroiled in VAR controversy. The Reds were left aggrieved after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham that Luis Diaz had a goal that should have broken the deadlock failed to be awarded. The winger was flagged offside when the game but replays showed he was clearly onside – yet VAR did not intervene because of a miscommunication between the officials. Referees association the PGMOL have since admitted a significant human error was made by VAR referee Darren England. Liverpool have now submitted a request for VAR audio between England and Hooper to be…
Darren England and Dan Cook, the VAR officials responsible for the failure to award Luis Diaz a goal at the weekend, have been dropped for the upcoming round of Premier League matches. Simon Hooper, who refereed the clash, has been retained and will act as VAR for Everton‘s meeting with Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon. Liverpool travel to Brighton on Sunday at 2pm and that game will be refereed by Anthony Taylor, who himself has had run-ins with Jurgen Klopp in the past. Taylor sent off the Reds’ boss towards the end of a 1-0 win over Man City back in October 2022 for yelling in…
Whilst Amrabat could be ready-made for Liverpool’s first team, Gravenberch has age on his side heading into the next few seasons. The Dutchman is six years Amrabat’s junior and has plenty of time to develop and learn from players such as Mac Allister and Endo, aiming to become one of Europe’s leading midfielders. However, Gravenberch’s desperation for first-team football signals that he expects regular first-team minutes, putting Klopp under pressure to offer the talent playtime. But with Liverpool fighting on four fronts so far this term, there could be plenty of opportunities for Gravenberch to settle into Klopp’s side. Liverpool’s…
Liverpool could have signed a “fine backup player” in Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat as Redmen TV presenter Paul Machin compares him to another star signed at Anfield this summer. Reds head coach Jurgen Klopp bolstered his options in the middle of the park during the summer transfer window. Liverpool news – Sofyan Amrabat In a recent interview with BBC Sport, Amrabat confirmed that he only wanted to join Manchester United despite interest from bitter rivals Liverpool. The 27-year-old first gained the attention of the Premier League giants following a string of impressive performances for Morocco during the 2022 World…
Chris Sutton can’t get his head around what Liverpool are trying to get from their recent statement about the PGMOL. The Reds are refusing to let the mistakes from Saturday’s loss against Tottenham Hotspur lie and issued a withering statement towards the officials on Sunday. The strongly worded response has been – quite bizarrely – met with widespread criticism. Adding his voice to the chorus of dissenters was former striker Sutton, who queried Liverpool’s motives for Mail Sport’s ‘It’s All Kicking Off’ podcast. “They are not going to get the game replayed are they? They aren’t going to get points…
Cody Gakpo will miss Liverpool’s next two matches, it is reported. The striker was forced off in the Reds’ 2-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Gakpo picked up an injury shortly before scoring the visitors’ equaliser in first-half stoppage-time in north London and left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a brace. Per The Athletic, Gakpo underwent a scan which has shown he will not face a prolonged period on the treatment table. But the £37 million signing from PSV Eindhoven will be absent for Thursday’s Europa League Group E clash against Royal Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield and the Premier League…
