PGMOL chief Howard Webb took part in Sky Sports‘ ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’ show with the supposed intention of providing more clarity, but is he really just digging the officials a bigger hole? When things go wrong in football we often ask for transparency in the hope that it will lead to improvements and, at least, offer fans insight into how decisions are reached – rightly or wrongly. The VAR audio released in the wake of the Luis Diaz offside ordeal at Tottenham was a step in the right direction, but it certainly didn’t make us feel any better about it. It was exactly as chaotic as…

Trent Alexander-Arnold has made a surprise claim over the toughest winger he faced that may have gone forgotten, with the winger now a free agent. The Liverpool vice-captain took part in the club’s ‘We Are Liverpool’ podcast to kick off season two, in an in-depth interview alongside Jan Molby. Among the questions Alexander-Arnold faced was ‘who was the best player he faced that people wouldn’t know about’, with the right-back opting for an opponent from his academy days. “I would say Brandon Barker,” was his reply. “He played for City, I was [an] U18s [player]. I played for U21s, first ever…

Liverpool have been urged to sign Napoli sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia should Mo Salah leave Anfield. The Egyptian forward has been strongly linked with a move away from the club over the past year. Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad were interested in signing him in the summer and had a series of bids rejected by Liverpool. Talk over an exit has not subsided and former Reds star Stephen Warnock has suggested that Kvaratskhelia could be an ideal replacement should Salah be sold. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “Everyone’s replaceable. I’ve said it about Suarez, I’ve said it about Coutinho, and he [Salah] will be replaceable in time.…

After turning down Liverpool for Chelsea, Romeo Lavia is yet to make his debut for the club, with a serious ankle injury set to keep him sidelined. The to-and-fro between Lavia and Moises Caicedo in the latter weeks of the transfer window ultimately left Liverpool with neither. Both opted to join Chelsea, with the Reds eventually pivoting to Wataru Endo. So far this season, none of those three players have set things alight, but the situation around Lavia – who reports claimed turned Liverpool down as he felt like their “second choice” – is different. The midfielder, signed from Southampton, is still awaiting…

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has an agreement with the Bundesliga side to leave should one of his former clubs makes an approach. The ex-Liverpool midfielder, who spent five years at Anfield between 2004 and 2009, has impressed at Leverkusen since taking over as head coach last year. The 41-year-old inherited a team threatened with a relegation battle, but lifted them to a sixth-placed finish in 2022/23 as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League. As a reward for his strong start, Alonso was awarded with a contract extension until 2026 earlier this year. His position at Leverkusen…

Marc Cucurella played a grand total of zero minutes through our first six Premier League matches of the season, watching on quietly though unmissably (that hair!) from the bench. But he was pressed into action from the bottom of the depth chart for the last two (and the League Cup third round as well) thanks to injuries and suspensions, and he actually acquitted himself decently enough, playing out of position on the right flank instead of his usual spot on the left. (Reminds me of the occasions when José Bosingwa would play in an unfamiliar defensive role, and generally end…

Romelu Lukaku’s Chelsea misery looks like coming to an end, with the Blues agreeing a fee with Roma for a permanent move next summer. The Belgian striker joined Chelsea for what was then a club record £97.5m fee in 2021 and made a fast start to his second stint at Stamford Bridge. The goals quickly dried up, though, while a falling-out with then-manager Thomas Tuchel saw him loaned back to former club Internazionale last term. Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival at Stamford Bridge didn’t bring a return for Lukaku, who has joined Roma on loan for the current campaign. The move to…

The Reds have been heavily linked with a mid-season move for the 22-year-old, having seen his club push back any attempts to buy him in the summer. And according to journalist Graeme Bailey, Fluminense certainly won’t stand in Andre’s way this time. Speaking on 90min’s Talking Transfers podcast, Bailey claimed that the Brazil international is certain to leave, with Liverpool very much in the driving seat. “Many people think he’s the best defensive midfielder in the Brazilian top flight at the moment,” says the journalist. “It’s our understanding that they [Liverpool] were in attendance for the Copa Libertadores semi-final [last…
