Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant believes the signings of Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram would make Jurgen Klopp’s side Champions League contenders next season. Both midfielders were linked with a move to Anfield in the summer and have been backed to join in an upcoming window. Klopp oversaw a major overhaul of his midfield before the start of this season. He allowed Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to leave after Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were released at the end of their contracts. He swiftly brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai before adding Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch later in the window. But Pennant…

Now it turns out the Liverpool manager does. But as usual with football, it is not that simple. Jurgen Klopp cut a dejected but composed figure in the post-match interviews after the controversy at Tottenham Hotspur. It was fast becoming clear that a perfectly good Luis Diaz goal had been disallowed. But rather than let emotion get the better of him, Klopp told the media in London: “Nobody expects 100% correct decisions on the field, but we all thought when VAR comes in that it might make things easier. “I knew it [was onside] at half time. With normal pictures it was easy…
A leading sports lawyer has revealed how the Premier League could be forced to replay Liverpool’s game against Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds saw their unbeaten start to the Premier League season end on Saturday evening when they were beaten 2-1 by Ange Postecoglou’s side. A stoppage-time own goal from Joel Matip came after Son Heung-min and Cody Gakpo had both scored. However, the defeat only told half of the story, as Liverpool were left incensed after having a goal wrongly ruled out for offside during the opening 45 minutes, with the game still goalless. The PGMOL admitted immediately after the game that…
Manchester United slumped to a fifth defeat in their last seven matches last night, losing 3-2 to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford. Despite leading twice through goals from Rasmus Hojlund, United suffered their second defeat in as many games in the competition this season. They remain bottom of Group A.
Galatasaray manager, Okan Buruk, has revealed he told his players to target Manchester United midfielder Casemiro during both teams’ UEFA Champions League tie on Tuesday night. Buruk watched as Galatasaray defeated Man United 3-2 in the Champions League encounter at Old Trafford. Speaking during his post-match interview, Buruk said: “We wanted to put pressure on Casemiro in the midfield with (Lucas) Torreira. Kaan (Ayhan) is a player who plays well defensively and without the ball. We wanted to use both together. “I think Kaan performed a very important task. He gave support.” The result against Galatasaray leaves…
Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund produced a fantastic individual performance during the club’s 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League last night The Dane has been a lively presence for the Red Devils. He has yet to score his maiden Premier League goal, but has been a revelation in the Champions League. The 20-year-old netted his first United goal in the 4-3 defeat at Bayern. He continued his good form in Europe with a fantastic brace against the Turkish champions. Hojlund made a terrific run into the box on the counter-attack to convert Marcus Rashford’s cross. With the scores level…
Rasmus Hojlund had twice given United the lead but the Turkish team pegged them back each time before Andre Onana’s error led to Casemiro being red carded in his attempt to salvage the situation. Mauro Icardi missed the penalty but made amends with the winner. Questions will be asked of Onana, uncertain throughout, but much of the defence were culpable for the capitulation. Having lost to Bayern Munich in their opening Champions League game, there is much work to do to progress beyond the group stage now. Ten Hag’s concerns are more immediate given that United have now lost six…
Europe’s elite sides have been paying plenty of attention to Feyenoord in recent months in wake of their impressive Eredivisie triumph last season. Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez is being monitored by a host of teams, but another player catching the eye is Netherlands youth international Timber. The 22-year-old is capable of operating in various midfield roles and has so far registered three assists and one goal in seven league games this season. Timber, the twin brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien, has impressed the Gunners on their scouting trips to De Kuip this term. Scouts from Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have also filed favourable…
Changes will be afoot yet again when Liverpool turn their attention back to the Europa League tomorrow. Europe’s secondary competition is a place where Jurgen Klopp, his squad and supporters alike don’t want to be. They’ve had to settle for a spot competing for the Champions League’s less glamourous and significantly less lucrative sibling. Still, there’s some excitement when it comes to the Europa League. Kopites are taking the tournament for what it is and the opponents and away trips usually not on the agenda are being approached with gusto. A maiden meeting against Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise takes…
