Jamie Redknapp feels Nicolas Jackson should have taken the penalty for Chelsea in Sunday’s defeat to West Ham – not Enzo Fernandez. The 50-year-old made the comments when speaking on Sky Sports after the game. What’s the story? Well, the Argentina international squandered the chance to put Chelsea 2-1 up in the 43rd minute when he saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Alphonse Areola. West Ham then went on to score twice in the second half to record a 3-1 win. Interestingly, Redknapp thinks Jackson should have taken the spot-kick rather than Fernandez. The son of Harry Redknapp…
Liverpool are in discussions over signing a highly-rated young midfielder to bolster the ranks in their squad. The Reds are still lacking in numbers in the centre of the park but picked up their first win of the season at the weekend at home to Bournemouth, with new signing Wataru Endo coming off the bench. Manager Jurgen Klopp would like another signing or two in midfield though, with Cody Gakpo playing in there of late. With just under two weeks to go before the window closes, Liverpool could yet be set for a flurry of activity – and have reportedly…
The venerable Anfield Road stand in Liverpool has run into trouble. The construction’s lead contractors, The Buckingham Group, recently filed for administration. Workers swiftly left the site as a result of this unexpected development, foreshadowing an eventual delay in the expansion project. The new stand was initially scheduled to be unveiled before the start of the 2023–24 season by Liverpool FC. However, a revised deadline was declared for October in a statement that was made shortly before the start of the season. Due to this modification, the Reds’ Premier League campaign began with a smaller capacity, holding only 51,000 spectators.…
The signing of the Japan captain raised some eyebrows given the age of the midfielder and the relatively low fee. Jurgen Klopp has conducted major surgery on his midfield area this summer, with five senior players making way for Alexis Mac Allister, Domink Szoboszlai and more recently Endo himself. The Athletic‘s James Pearce has now indicated that Endo will represent the conclusion of Liverpool’s business in the middle of park, adding that the expectation is that he has “been bought to start matches.” Pearce wrote on the club’s transfer situation: “As things stand, Liverpool don’t intend to recruit another specialist No 6…
Liverpool failed with their British transfer record attempt to sign Moises Caicedo, who had a nightmare of a debut for Chelsea against West Ham yesterday. The Reds then quickly moved to sign 30-year-old Endo from Stuttgart and the Japanese star made his debut at Anfield vs Bournemouth on Saturday. Liverpool still need a proven quality play breaker in his prime to improve the defensive midfield position and they have been heavily linked with Joao Palhinha. As per Dean Jones, the Merseysiders have the funds to secure the signing of the Portuguese international from Fulham and the move cannot be ruled…
Frenkie de Jong was named the MVP of Barcelona’s 2-0 La Liga win over Cádiz on Sunday, and it’s hard to argue with that vote. The Dutchman started at center-back but spent most of his time on the pitch in midfield, running the show from deep and even playing some minutes at left-back at the very end of the game. It was another fantastic performance by De Jong, who already looks in peak form at the start of the season. But even if his individual game was great, Frenkie knows the team still needs to improve. And that was the tone of…
Rubiales caused controversy during the Women’s World Cup medal ceremony after the football chief was seen kissing Hermoso on the lips. La Roja beat England 1-0 in Sunday’s final to lift the trophy with Olga Carmona’ first-half strike. Rubiales was a little too familiar with many of the players during the medal presentation as he was busy hugging, kissing them on the cheek and even lifting some players off the ground. However, it was his embrace and mouth-to-mouth with Hermoso that really raised eyebrows. Rubiales first hugged the 33-year-old striker before grabbing her by the head and then planted a…
Kylian Mbappe appears unlikely to move to Real Madrid before the end of the summer transfer window, although given the drama surrounding the PSG star in recent weeks, nothing should be discounted. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has been welcomed back into the PSG squad and marked his return with a goal in a 1-1 draw against Toulouse on Saturday. Mbappe made it clear that he had no plans to join Real Madrid this summer – but the possibility was certainly open to him if both he and the Spanish club had agreed. Instead, the probability is that he will move to Los Blancos next summer, although…
The Kylian Mbappe transfer saga this summer is coming up with new twists every other day as if it is a top-rated thriller movie. The ending of this story remains very much unpredictable, even to those closely following. Will the Frenchman remain at Paris Saint-Germain? Or will he end up at Real Madrid? For a long time this summer, Mbappe moving to Real Madrid seemed almost inevitable. The Frenchman was even left out of PSG’s pre-season squad and did not even train with their first-team for a while. But recently, the situation between the two parties improved almost out of the blue.…
Laporte joined Manchester City from Athletic Bilbao for a reported transfer fee of £57 million in January 2018. The 29-year-old established himself as an integral piece of Pep Guardiola’s defense, helping the Cityzens find success. The Spain international has made 180 appearances for City across all competitions, scoring 12 goals, and winning 13 major trophies with the club. Despite being a part of City’s treble-winning squad last season, Laporte found himself struggling to break into the starting XI. Guardiola preferred the likes of John Stones, Ruben Dias, and Manuel Akanji over the Frenchman, limiting him to just 24 appearances in…
