Chelsea made ‘multiple enquiries’ for €80m superstar
Chelsea made “more than one enquiry” for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan this summer, according to reports in Italy.
The Blues were eager to sign a new shot-stopper during the summer transfer window and they identified the France international as a key target.
However, Milan were reluctant to lose Maignan and the Rossoneri placed an €80 million price tag on his head in order to dissuade interested parties.
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Chelsea enquired about Maignan’s availability on several occasions, but they were unable to agree a deal with Milan and the Frenchman stayed put at San Siro.
In addition, Bayern Munich were also interested in securing Maignan’s signature, however the Bundesliga giants fell short in their attempts to land the former Lille goalkeeper, despite contacting his representatives
Maignan is reportedly happy at Milan and he may even sign a contract extension at San Siro, as per Corriere dello Sport. His current deal is due to expire in 2026, but the 29-year-old is in talks to sign a new contract with the Italian giants.
Maignan has spent the past three years at Milan and he has racked up 116 appearances for the Italian giants during that time.
After missing out on Maignan, Chelsea opted to sign Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal instead.
The west London club paid €24.5m to sign the Denmark U21 international, although he is yet to displace Robert Sanchez as Enzo Maresca’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The Spaniard has started all five of Chelsea’s Premier League matches so far this season, with Jorgensen limited to minutes in the Europa Conference League and the Carabao Cup.
In addition, Genk wonderkid Mike Penders will become the latest goalkeeper to join Chelsea in 2025, while the Blues currently have Djordje Petrovic, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Gabriel Slonina and Eddie Beach out on loan.
