Milan will take their time in finding a new sporting director, but they have already made up their mind about partying ways with Sergio Conceiçao. They won’t need to do much or spend to oust him since his contract has an exit clause.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, owner Gerry Cardinale wasn’t fully on board with the decisions but gave in to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and agent Jorge Mendes when they hired the Portuguese gaffer and signed Joao Felix. Since neither choice has panned out, he’ll let CEO Giorgio Furlani call the shots next.
The Milan higher-ups feel that Conceiçao doesn’t have the pulse of the locker room and is butting heads with some cornerstones. For instance, he has often benched Youssouf Fofana, Rafael Leao, and Fikayo Tomori. Even winning the Coppa Italia, the club’s lone remaining objective, won’t be enough to save him.
The CEO will speak with a few candidates for the front office position, and the call about the coach will come afterward. The club wouldn’t mind going with an accomplished Italian in both cases but is open to any solution. As for the dugout, the main candidates are Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto De Zerbi, Vincenzo Italiano, and Antonio Conte.
The firing will be easy to justify, but it’d be ironic if they went on a run now and re-entered the Champions League fray, although too many teams would have to falter for them to have a shot. It doesn’t hurt to have lofty targets, but it’d be surprising if they managed to lure a coach under contract and thriving at his current team.
