The Dallas Mavericks are bolstering their coaching staff by adding veteran shooting coach and former Lakers assistant Mike Penberthy, a two-time NBA champion as a coach, known for his work with top players.

The Dallas Mavericks are hiring veteran shooting coach Mike Penberthy to their coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Penberthy, a former NBA champion both as a player and an assistant, spent the last three seasons with the Denver Nuggets as a shooting coach and pro scout.

He previously won an NBA title as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 under Frank Vogel, working alongside current Mavs head coach Jason Kidd. The 50-year-old added another championship with the Nuggets in 2023.

Earlier in his career, Penberthy also served as a shooting coach with the Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Lakers.

Penberthy earned praise from Anthony Davis for helping him improve his shooting during their time together in Los Angeles from 2019 to 2022.

As a player, he captured a championship with the Lakers in 2001. Penberthy played two seasons in the NBA and appeared in 56 games.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, are undergoing significant changes to their coaching staff ahead of the 2025–26 season.

Jay Triano was recently hired to replace Alex Jensen, who left to become the head coach at the University of Utah. Frank Vogel was brought in to take over for Sean Sweeney, who joined the San Antonio Spurs as associate head coach.

Additionally, player development coach God Shammgod departed after his contract expired and accepted a new role with the Orlando Magic. Former Mavs assistant Jared Dudley also left to join the Nuggets as a top assistant.
