La gabbia: “L’atmosfera a Milano è evidentemente negativa”.

Milan defender Matteo Gabbia admits the situation is ‘obviously bad’ in the locker room after a third straight defeat left them ninth in Serie A.

The Rossoneri were already struggling badly going into San Siro against Lazio this evening, going out of the Champions League to Feyenoord in the play-offs, losing back-to-back Serie A matches against Torino and Bologna.

They were beaten 2-1 by Lazio this evening for a third straight defeat, sealed by the 98th minute Pedro penalty.

Gabbia spoke to the media in the press conference after the match and was asked what the atmosphere was like in the locker room.

“Obviously bad,” was his reply. “It is even difficult to talk about this, the situation is not positive and it’s hard to find a response.

“There is bitterness, but we must try to press the rest button. It might seem like a cliché, but we’ve got to make sure the season ends on a different note.

“The results just aren’t coming and we must try to remain united, ending this campaign with pride.”

Milan ultras staged a protest by leaving the Curva Sud empty for the first 15 minutes, then chanted insults at club owner Gerry Cardinale and the players throughout the rest of the match.

Does Gabbia therefore have a message for the supporters?

“I don’t feel able to make any proclamations. We have to do better, so if the results arrive, then the atmosphere at San Siro will be different. We got ourselves into this situation and we must try to get out of it.”

What is missing from the Milan performances this season, in particular their weakness at the back?

“It is about having the right positions and shape when we lose the ball. I understand it might seem banal, but our objective is to try to improve our defects,” concluded Gabbia.
