Ex-Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri has emerged as a top candidate for the managerial position at AC Milan.
As per La Gazzetta dello Sport, Igli Tare, the frontrunner for the sporting director role at Milan, has handpicked Allegri as his first choice to lead the project with Rossoneri.
Tare will hold talks with Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani over the sporting director position this week.
Former Tottenham Hotspur chief Fabio Paratici was also linked with the sporting director job at Milan, but the talks collapsed due to legal issues.
Milan may look to bring in a new manager in the summer following current head coach Sergio Conceicao’s underwhelming tenure this season.
The Portuguese gaffer has managed only 11 wins while losing seven and drawing four since taking over from his compatriot Paulo Fonseca in December.
With Milan languishing in ninth place in Serie A, Conceicao finds himself in a precarious position.
He could only save his job by leading Rossoneri to Champions League qualification and the Coppa Italia title.
Rossoneri played out a 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Inter Milan in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Both teams will lock horns again on 23rd April.
Allegri has been without a job since he was sacked by Juventus during his second stint last year.
The 57-year-old managed Milan between 2010 and 2014, during which he won a Serie A title and Super Coppa Italiana.
Although the Bianconeri became an unstoppable force in Serie A during Allegri’s first stint, his second spell was a forgettable one.
The Italian manager has also been the subject of interest from Saudi clubs over the last few months, but he has remained coy about his future.
Allegri’s experience and unparalleled achievements make him a viable option for Milan, but his failed second spell at Juventus might suggest he is falling behind.
Napoli head coach Antonio Conte has also been linked with a move to Milan.
