Arsenal are already the set-piece kings of the Premier League. But Mikel Arteta has looked to bolster their already-impressive record by adding an ex-Liverpool coach to his backroom set-up.
Thomas Gronnemark, the Reds’ former throw-in coach, is now working with the Gunners as they look to win a first Premier League title since 2004.
Arsenal have scored 14 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League this season, with 12 coming from corner-kicks alone thanks to the work of their set-piece coach Nicolas Jover.
But they are now looking to enhance their own throw-in record, with The Times reporting they have started working with Gronnemark, too.
The Dane, who also works with Brentford, has visited the Gunners’ training ground to pass on his expertise after being hired on a consultancy basis.
Gronnemark previously worked with Liverpool between 2018 and 2023, with his own work with the Reds contributing to Jurgen Klopp’s side winning the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2020.
He recently opened the door on a return to Anfield, having seen Arne Slot’s team struggle when defending set-pieces this season.
“Liverpool are always welcome to call me,” he told RG. “The only way I wouldn’t say yes to Liverpool is if I were already coaching another top Premier League team that’s actually a direct competitor.
“I’m not talking about a team like Brentford, and as long as I’m not full-time at another club, as long as my contract gives me the green light, I’d say yes.
“Of course, with my history with the club, my connection with the fans, and people who are writing to me every day on social media and thanking me for my time with the team, I’d say yes in most cases.”
Admittedly, his work with Arsenal might now force the Gronnemark to retract such an offer.
Slot has repeatedly bemoaned Liverpool’s own record from set-pieces so far this season, culminating in the departure of specialist coach Aaron Briggs at the end of last month.
