Tottenham Hotspur’s dream of signing Eberechi Eze is all but over because of Arsenal.
Spurs have admired the Crystal Palace star for a long time, and after James Maddison’s ACL injury, Daniel Levy started talks to sign him.
Eze even held talks with Thomas Frank and had agreed to join Tottenham, but the deal flipped on its head once Arsenal made their move.
TBR Football can confirm now that Arsenal have agreed a £68 million deal to sign Eze from Crystal Palace in the coming days.
Missing out on Eberechi Eze is not a good look for Tottenham.
Spurs had already failed to land Morgan Gibbs-White in this window despite being willing to trigger his release clause at Nottingham Forest.
That angered many Tottenham fans, but the rage is at an all-time high now after Daniel Levy failed to complete a deal for Eze when Spurs were the only club in the race.
Now, to add more fuel to the fire, Jason Cundy has given Tottenham a new nickname – ‘the Newcastle of the South’.
He said on talkSPORT: “Do you know who Spurs are? You’re the Newcastle of the South!
“You are basically Newcastle. You think you’re such a big club. You both win your first trophy in a generation, you both miss out on signings, you both think you’re massive, and you both can’t get anything over the line.
“Spurs are basically just Newcastle. You’re both, basically, brothers.”
An already annoyed Jamie O’Hara replied: “Shut up, Jason, honestly!”
Levy will say that he did everything he could to sign Eze, but this deal should’ve been wrapped up weeks ago.
Arsenal struck a deal for Eze just hours after news broke that Kai Havertz is injured. Spurs have known for a while now that James Maddison will miss a big chunk of the season after tearing his ACL.
Levy should’ve struck a deal to sign Eze just a few days after that happened, but his negotiating methods slowed the deal down and opened the door for Arsenal.
Now, with just 11 days left in the transfer window, Tottenham will have to start over again, and there is a chance that they will not find anyone who’s on Eze’s level.
That would be extremely concerning for Frank in his debut season.
